If you follow me on Twitter, you’ve probably heard me express my disdain towards the ’70s trend and festival fashion. And trust me – despite this look post – it still exists. How else do you respond to a trend that’s been shoved down your throat for over two years other than to be annoyed?
But that brings me to my birthday, when I was in Sandton City shopping with my sister and we entered my fave store, Mr Price. I saw this suede A-line mini skirt and I knew that I finally found it! Every time it had been in other stores prior, I always seemed to miss it, so I just took the plunge and bought it.
But other than my fur waist coat that I bought last July, this skirt is probably the only ’70s inspired item I own. And I’m lowkey impressed and also lowkey surprised by that because I don’t know how I had managed to avoid it for so long. I mean, if you walk into any major store, you would have seen a ’70s/festival edit – and repeatedly, I might add – over the past two years. Yes, there have been some mod-’60s edits too and ’90s flare, but brands keep bring it back to the ’70s.
Am I the only one that feels like this has been the fashion equivalent of making fetch happen? Taking Coachella inspired clothes and trying to sell it to us in various forms all year gets a little tiring, in my view. But don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate everything about the ’70s trend, I think I’m just incredibly tired of festival fashion.
Like, I am 100% without a doubt here for the fur! Mr Price has even been playing around with bolder colours of fur this season and I am ready to be Biggy Shorty 2.0 for a while. I also enjoyed these high waisted A-line mini skirts and wide leg (not boot cut) pants. But enough with the fringe and the forced Coachella vibes (I mean Rocking The Daisies is only in October, anyway)! There were other parts of the ’70s that could’ve been delved into, like, hello, Diana Ross??
But then again, one of the great lessons about fashion that we can learn from the ’70s is freedom, and the freedom to wear whatever you want. I shot this look on Freedom Day with the babe, Sibu Mpanza, and ironically, it was at Rhodes Memorial (a black woman posing in front of Cecil Rhodes – it doesn’t get any more ironic than that). Before this trend (hopefully) is retired forever, I thought I should at least get to play around in it, just once ?
So here are my 2c on my love-hate relationship with the way the trend cycle keeps going back to the ’70s. Let me know your views on it too!

So somehow (is it witchcraft) your legs are 10x longer in this skirt (which really really works for you)??? Explain.
Also, I really hate the 70s. Ok, not hate. Mostly because I was very amped for a 2000s revival when the 90s began to die down. I thought we could finally redeem the Lizzie McGuire mess/amazingness.
Anyway, I digress. My point was meant to get to a point Adele, from Secret hipster (not Adkins lol), said re: the undying 70s: a lot of the designers now were born in the 80s and a big part of their youth would have been in reference to the 60s/70s.

LOL thank you, I guess! This skirt literally covers about 5% of my legs so the rest is just on display.
I feel you on the disappointment on the trend direction, but Adele makes a good point. It’s just… lacking innovation. The ’70s have been done to death in the numerous trend cycles but this one seems to be undying!
I’ve been waiting patiently for the fringes to disappear, yet they remain. It’s my last favourite fashion decade of the 1900s. Well-written post and great shots!
