Here’s To The Kids

Here’s To The Kids

Before I begin, I would love to wish all the daddies who stuck around, single mothers and father’s no longer with us a Happy Father’s Day! Lord knows where I’d be without my daddy – he is caring and so selfless and always pushing me to be the best I can be. I haven’t a clue where I’d be without him and I love him so much!

In South Africa, June 16 is one of the most important days in our history. Known as Youth Day, it’s dedicated to the brave school goers who felt so strongly about their cause that they took a stand and protested for the right not to learn in a language of their oppressors. About 20 000 students took part, and after the police violently reacted to their peaceful protest, 176 died that day.

To me, Youth Day is a constant reminder of the power my peers and I, as youths, possess. The people who partook in the protests were my age and younger – yet they didn’t let their age be an excuse for their rights to be taken from them or their voices to be silenced (or in their case, forced to be taught in Afrikaans). They believed strongly in what they aimed to achieve and that is what I take from that day. We are powerful.  We can make our voices heard if we so wish to speak. A quote from Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2:

It is the quality of ones convictions that determines success, not the number of followers.

In commemoration of that, I took part of the Johannesburg Junior Council‘s Youth March in Newtown, Johannesburg to march for equal education and norms for basic educational infrastructure. There are so many schools all over my country that lack basic resources, such as textbooks, toilets, concrete school environments, libraries, laboratories, etc. The aim of this march was to raise awareness and support of the Minimum Norms and Standards for Basic School Infrastructure by signing a petition to ensure that this incredibly important bill can be put into law and enforced/supported by government.

As a group of learners, today, on June 16 2013, marched 3.1km to Constitution Hill to make our point heard in the CBD.

It would be incredible if you could please show some support and help sign the petition here

Thank you so much!

P.s., I changed up DearSolo’s look a bit! Hope you like it 🙂

Happy Blogaversary DearSolo!

Happy Blogaversary DearSolo!

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, today is this little ole blog’s first birthday! (I didn’t intend on making a post today but then I changed my mind – of course I had to).

I just wanted to say a little thank you to my mother who takes me places and sometimes takes photos for me, my dad for getting me my Canon and the Wifi in my house (bless you!) but mostly:

The readers!!

Without you guys, I wouldn’t have 3500+ pageviews despite my six month hiatus and everyone’s lovely words, comments and IFB messages literally mean so much to me! The Independent Fashion Bloggers are the most amazing, encouraging and supportive people ever! Thank you thank you thank you!

I hope I wont disappoint any of you guys in the future!

Thank you all so much once again!

(Like I said in yesterday’s post, if any Joburg bloggers want to collaborate, just ask! Also, if anyone is good with code/themes, please help me!)

Back To Black

Back To Black
It happens to be my blog’s first birthday tomorrow! I would celebrate it properly but I spent about half of that year on a hiatus so I don’t think it counts – but I just wanted to thank you all so much for the support! Your comments and kind words both on here, IFB and Twitter mean the world to me – so I hope I wont disappoint you in the future. If you are a Joburg based blogger and want to collaborate, always feel free to contact me via my links! Thank you for the support once again and here’s to another year 🙂

The photo speaks for itself. More photos below.

Today I Went To…

Today I Went To…
Well, actually, I went to Sandton City but going to Topshop might have made me the happiest. Their collections never seem to disappoint – well, at least not me (my mom went in before me and left about five minutes later because there “wasn’t much in there”). So I thought I could share a few of my favourite winter picks from the store (except the accessories and shoes, if I had the chance to fully engage with them, I would still be there now). Also, one should never underestimate the value of a mirror selfie.
Before I do, though, here’s what I wore today:
Shirt from H&M London, Leather Jacket from Yeye Oge Morningside, Leggings from Woolworths, Boots from Topshop
Now to begin with my absolute favourite – this jersey/top with Sugarhill Gang’s Rapper’s Delight lyrics on it.

So excited to see that Topshop SA now has disco pants!
Need this denim skater skirt!

I also went to Cotton On today and bought this beautiful jacket and a new sweater, because sweater weather is better weather and when Joburg finally decides to have a legitimate winter, I need to be prepared.

(To all those writing exams – like I am about to begin on Monday – good luck!!)
